Bishop of Metuchen to Visit the Infirm on World Day of the Sick

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Roman Catholic Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski of the Diocese of Metuchen will observe the upcoming World Day of the Sick by celebrating a special Mass and visiting the sick on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Saint Peter's University Hospital.

Bishop Paul G Bootkoski - Day of Sick 2014Bishop Bootkoski will lead a noon Mass in the hospital chapel to be followed by visits with patients from 1:35 to 2:15 p.m. Bishop Bootkoski will also make a special stop in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to view its new NicView camera system, which provides families of infants with 24-hour viewing of their babies across multiple technology platforms, unlimited connections via password and personalized updates.

World Day of the Sick includes the Anointing of the Sick, one of the church's seven sacraments.  The anointing is reserved for people whose health is seriously impaired or stressed by aging.  World Day of the Sick has three consistent, prevailing themes: first, it reminds the faithful to pray intensely and sincerely for those who are sick; second, the celebration invites Christians to reflect on and respond to human suffering, and third, this day recognizes and honors all persons who work in the health care field and serve as caretakers. World Day of the Sick is tied to the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.  The shrine at Lourdes in southern France is a major pilgrimage site for people seeking physical healing by drinking from the  shrine's spring and bathing in its waters.
