Saint Peter’s University Hospital has earned an “A” grade for the Spring 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Saint Peter’s University Hospital has earned an “A” grade for the Spring 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections, it was announced today. Saint Peter’s was the lone hospital in New Brunswick and one of only three in Middlesex County to earn an A grade. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the grade provides the public with information they can use to protect themselves and their families.
“Saint Peter’s is deeply committed to the safety of our patients, as this grade shows, and we take tremendous pride in that record,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, interim CEO and president of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. “All members of our patient care team consistently adhere to best clinical practices in the compassionate care they provide. This fourth consecutive A is truly a credit to them.”
Saint Peter’s ranked highly nationally. Among the 2,629 U.S. hospitals graded, 823 earned an A, 706 earned a B, 932 earned a C, 168 earned a D, and 10 earned an F.
Leapfrog looked at medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections to determine the grades. The goal was to assess a patient's risk of further injury or infection if they visited a certain hospital.
The analysis estimates that more than 30,000 lives could be saved each year if every hospital improved its safety record to A standards. Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm.
