Pediatric Endocrinology
Because diabetes in childhood and adolescence is specialized, The Children's Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital uses a team approach to treatment, management and education. The Pediatric Endocrinology Division at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital offers a full range of services for the care and treatment of the endocrine system and diabetes.
As a state-designated Regional Center for Inherited Endocrine Disorders, our staff provides testing, treatment, and education relating to congenital hypothyroidism and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, recognized by the American Diabetes Association since 1993, provides a comprehensive program for children and adults with diabetes, promoting the concept of self-care through education about the disease and the teaching of skills necessary for diabetes self-care. For children with diabetes the focus is on providing the child and the family with the knowledge and technical and psychosocial skills necessary for managing diabetes. With the guidance of our healthcare team, families are able to acquire the skills to care for their child. They are taught about meal planning, exercise needs, medications and how to monitor effects of their child’s treatment.
Group sessions for children and teens are offered as part of the program. In inpatient and outpatient settings, a team of pediatric nurses, dietitians, and endocrinologists help children and their families learn the necessary information and master the skills for living day-to-day with diabetes.
