Saint Peter’s 2022 Gala Honors Leaders in Health Care and the Community

On March 10, 2022, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System welcomed guests back to the first in-person Gala since 2019. The Gala, held at The Palace at Somerset, raised more than $600,000, making this the most successful Saint Peter’s Gala. Funds raised from the Gala support priority projects as determined by the Board of Governors and hospital leadership. Past projects funded include the purchase of the new community mobile health van, anesthesia unit and incubators for its smallest patients cared for in Saint Peter’s nationally recognized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
This year’s Gala recognized four honorees for their contributions to Saint Peter’s, its patients and the community at large. Consulting & Municipal Engineers (CME) Associates received the Bishop’s Award for its ongoing commitment to the community and Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. Through the years, CME Associates has supported multiple hospital projects, including the expansion and modernization of the Emergency Department, and provided personal protective equipment, such as N95 masks and meals for employees during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
CME Associates is known throughout the community not only for leading countless state-of-the-art projects that enriched the lives of residents, but also its dedication to supporting the community it serves. CME Associates has hosted a sock and glove drive in support of a local homeless shelter, volunteered at a local parish carnival, participated in a Pink Out Day to support breast cancer research and supported many more organizations.
Two physicians received the Physician Appreciation Award, recognizing their dedication to providing expert and compassionate care and leadership: Amar Bukhari, MD, chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Saint Peter’s, and Henry Redel, MD, chief of Infectious Disease at Saint Peter’s and a physician with ID Care.
Dr. Bukhari has served as a physician at Saint Peter’s since 1997. He has been an integral member of the clinical team, serving on countless interdisciplinary committees and developing policies and protocols that ensure the safety and best possible care for patients. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Bukhari led on the frontlines. His calm nature and dedication to compassionate care was the leadership that was needed during an unprecedented time. Dr. Bukhari was responsible for assembling COVID physician teams that included infectious disease specialists, primary care physicians or hospitalists, pulmonologists, pharmacists and medical residents. Physician teams met weekly to review every patient collectively and decide on a management plan. At the height of the crisis, Dr. Bukhari was successfully leading seven physician teams.
Dr. Bukhari also serves as chair of the Ethics Committee at Saint Peter’s, is the co-director of the COVID-19 Recovery Program and established the Raheem Fund, which offers assistance to NICU families by securing items needed for their newborns.
Dr. Redel joined Saint Peter’s as the chief of Infectious Disease in 2020 and led the efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. He served as the lead physician on the COVID-19 multidisciplinary team, collaborating with other clinical team members including primary care physicians and hospitalists, pulmonologists, medical residents, pharmacists, cardiologists, respiratory therapists and nurses. Dr. Redel’s leadership skills provided a beacon of hope for many during the toughest days. He continued Saint Peter’s mission of providing expert and compassionate care, while navigating the dynamic environment that involved every department at Saint Peter’s and providing a clear direction for all during a time of uncertainty.
Dr. Redel is actively involved in research in several fields, including the impact of antibiotics on infants and Clostridium difficile infection. Dr. Redel is published in several medical journals and serves as an online editor for Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases. He wrote a chapter on Nutrition, Immunity, and Infection in an upcoming edition of the textbook.
The final award was presented to Linda Carroll, MSN, RN-BC, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer at Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. Linda has been a member of the Saint Peter’s team for 38 years and is a graduate of the Saint Peter’s Nursing School. Under Linda’s leadership, Saint Peter’s nursing staff has been recognized for providing clinical excellence, including Saint Peter’s Magnet® designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Nurses Association—becoming one of only five hospitals worldwide to achieve this honor for six consecutive terms.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Linda played a critical role in formalizing processes and clinical care protocols, including nursing and staff education about infection prevention policies, and providing timely communication throughout the organization.
