Course Description
Observers get an insight into residency with a schedule mimicking that of a 1st year resident:
- The day starts with receiving handoff at 6: 30 a.m., followed by attending daily morning reports and/or rounds. Following morning didactic sessions, are preliminary team rounds. This is then followed by resident team rounds, attending teaching rounds, afternoon conferences, patient-focused academic discussions and patient admissions. The day ends at 4:30pm on regular days and at 7pm on-call days by signing out to the night resident.
- Observers will be assigned to teams on the general medical floors. If attending for more than 2 weeks, participants will have the chance to observe in the Adult Outpatient Clinic for one of their weeks.
- They are expected to be professional at all times and be involved in the team by helping with literature review on patient-care topics.
- Observers will also be asked to keep a record of points of interest or medical learning points from the rotation. They will document any patient they observed, state the learning point with a reference. In two weeks of the rotation they should be able to present a robust portfolio of their observations. A faculty member will guide them to build the portfolio.
- They will also have access to our state-of-the-art 24-hour Medical Library.
- Enrollment in the course does NOT guarantee any recommendation or an interview at our institution.
