Welcome to the Saint Peter’s University Hospital Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program.
Five full-time faculty members and more than 32 community gastroenterologists provide education as part of the Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program The curriculum provides inpatient and outpatient training in clinical gastroenterology. Dr. Arkady Broder has spearheaded the creation of one of the finest endoscopy centers in the area where physicians perform a wide-range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. Debra Goldstein, MD, who has more than 25 years of clinical experience, is the lead physician in the area of irritable bowel syndrome and geriatric gastroenterology at the Saint Peter’s physician practice in Monroe. Andrew Korman, MD, trained in advanced endoscopy under David Carr-Locke, MD, an internationally famous endoscopist. Experienced in esophageal motility, Sugirdhana Velpari, MD, has developed a motility center to evaluate difficult esophageal disorders. Dr C.S. Pitchumoni, an International expert in pancreatic disorders has ably helped the team to create a strong research and clinically-based training. As a board certified clinical nutritionist, he has added a necessary nutritional component to the fellowship curriculum. Research has been an integral part of the activities of the division of Gastroenterology, whose practitioners have produced more than 30 papers and many more abstracts presented as posters as well as oral presentations at prestigious national meetings.
The Endoscopy Suite, which is available 24-hours-a-day, is well-staffed, user-friendly and has received high ratings from the public. The staffs of our various clinics also have earned a good reputation and work closely with fellows. The Department of Medicine is extremely helpful with all fellowship-related requirements and activities. With the help of the hospital’s administration, the division continues to lay a strong foundation as a reputable, productive fellowship program that also provides opportunities for serving the needy.
Our current fellows have been trained in research, hepatology, pancreatology and clinical nutrition at various institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh, New Jersey College of Medicine Newark and the Mayo Clinic.
Program Overview:
The Saint Peter's University Hospital Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program is a three-year program that accepts two fellows per academic training year. The majority of training takes place at Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Two months out of each year fellows are sent to a Hepatology/Transplant Clinic at the Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ.
Our primary goal is to provide a highly academic but clinically oriented program that is strong in general gastroenterology, hepatology, pancreatology and clinical nutrition. Fellows are expected to learn research methodology and clinical statistics. Division physicians are active researchers and producers of publications. The program has regular monthly educational activities such as GI Board Review, GI Journal Club, Radiology Conference, Tumor Board, Guidelines & GI Emergencies, Hepatic and Pancreatic Conference.

How to Apply:
The Gastroenterology Fellowship at Saint Peters University Hospital is a three-year program that accepts two fellows per training year. Fellowship applications will be accepted and reviewed only via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service).

Our fellowship requirements are:
- Successful completion of USMLE steps I and II or COMLEX steps I and II
- Three (3) Letters of recommendation (letter from program director strongly recommended)
- Personal Statement
- ECFMG Status
