Program Overview
The Saint Peter’s University Hospital/Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is designed to provide a structured educational environment, which allows for the professional development of suitably qualified physicians to confidently and skillfully be prepared for their anticipated role as primary-care providers in the practice of general obstetrics and gynecology. Our program cultivates an interest and enthusiasm for a career in academic medicine, by championing the concept of lifelong learning. The program is aware that some residents may plan on further training in fellowship programs, and to this end we provide all residents with clinical experiences and didactic background in the boarded subspecialties within our discipline. Throughout the four years this program provides a progressive increase in resident responsibilities, leading to independent caretaking activities, under faculty supervision, in the residents fourth year.
The specific educational objectives of Saint Peter's University Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program are as follows:
- To cultivate an understanding of the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of all aspects of normal and abnormal obstetrical care, and gynecological disorders.
- To further an understanding and participation in the management of problems related to the subspecialties of Obstetrics and Gynecology, including:
1.Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
2. Maternal Fetal Medicine
3. Gynecological Oncology
4. Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
- To advance an understanding of the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of primary-care medical problems in both the ambulatory and inpatient settings.
- To champion all women’s health care issues, patient safety and education.
- To further an understanding and appreciation of basic scientific research as it relates to the care of the female patient.
- To foster an understanding of the relevancy, competency and accuracy of medical literature and scientific reports, as they relate to our profession.
- To promote an environment that supports the personal growth of residents with regard to responsibility of patient care, an appreciation of cultural diversity, and development of a professional demeanor consistent with the core competencies as defined by the ACGME.
- To advance an environment promoting effective communication between residents, medical students, private-practice physicians, faculty and the community as a whole.
