Pediatric Residency Program

Our residency program is based at The Children's Hospital at Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Our faculty physicians are experienced in, dedicated to and enthusiastic about pediatric resident education.

Our freestanding residency program began in 2005 and has been thriving. Our residents are obtaining a comprehensive educational experience, and obtaining superb job and fellowship placements. Residents are involved in clinical care across a diverse spectrum of pediatric patients. Residents participate in research and scholarly activities throughout their training. Residents are key contributors to hospital quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. And residents work successfully in interdisciplinary teams encompassing nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers and many other health care professionals.

Saint Peter's sponsors and conducts our pediatric residency program with our partner, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). CHOP is the premier academic, clinical and research children's hospital in the United States. Saint Peter's partnership with CHOP enables our residents to receive an enhanced training experience, especially in the areas of subspecialty rotations and research.

Saint Peter's residency program combines an exceptional community-based and community-focused training experience in general pediatrics with a superb education in the pediatric subspecialties. Our residents spend the majority of their time at The Children's Hospital at Saint Peter's and rotate to CHOP for a total of three months throughout the three-year training period. Thus, our graduates are well prepared to embark on a career in general pediatrics or enter pediatric subspecialty training fellowships.

The goal of our residency program is to provide a high-quality comprehensive education and training experience and graduate highly competent pediatric physicians. We have an extensive schedule of educational conferences featuring guest lecturers who are renowned in their respective fields, as well as journal clubs and teaching rounds. We provide care to an impressively diverse patient population. Residents work directly with assigned faculty members on every rotation. Our faculty members provide close supervision and ensure frequent and continuous one-on-one interaction with our residents. Residents have multiple opportunities to be directly involved in child advocacy and community services for children.

Our curriculum ensures that our residents obtain competency in the following six core areas: (1) pediatric patient care, (2) pediatric medical knowledge, (3) interpersonal and communication skills, (4) practice-based learning and improvement, (5) professionalism, and (6) systems-based practice.

Our faculty advising system ensures that every resident has a consistent mentor and clear assistance in career planning, applying for fellowship training and/or obtaining a job in pediatric practice. Saint Peter’s affiliation with Rutgers - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School provides additional academic opportunities for our residents, including teaching of Rutgers third and fourth year medical students.
