Infants Younger Than 6 Months
- Newborn Hearing Screening
- Testing for newborns who refer on their newborn hearing screening at birth are discharged from the hospital prior to testing, or home births; the test is completed using the Auditory Brainstem Response Test (ABR)
- Diagnostic Auditory Brainstem Response Test (ABR)
- Conducted when hearing loss is suspected
- Otoacoustic Emissions Test (OAE)
- Evaluates the functionality of the outer hair cells within the cochlea.
Infants Older Than 6 Months
- Visual Reinforcement Audiometry
- A behavioral hearing test that uses speakers/headphones and visual reinforcement to measure hearing sensitivity
Toddlers 2 ½ to 5 Years of Age
- Conditioned Play Audiometry
- A behavioral hearing test that uses a game to test hearing
- For example, each time a child hears a sound, they drop a block into a bucket, etc.
- A behavioral hearing test that uses a game to test hearing
5 Years and Older
- Standard Audiometry
- Raise a hand when you hear a beep
Sedated Diagnostic Auditory Brainstem Response Test (ABR)
- Used when other methods have been unsuccessful, when hearing loss is suspected and/or when your child is too young to test with other methods
