Saint Peter’s University Hospital Recognized for Quality and Safety in Endoscopy
April 8, 2025

New Brunswick, N.J. – April 8, 2025 – Saint Peter's University Hospital's Endoscopy Unit has been granted a three-year renewal recognition by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), a leading gastrointestinal medical society, as part of its program dedicated to promoting quality and safety in endoscopy across the United States. The Endoscopy Unit at Saint Peter’s University Hospital is one of more than 600 endoscopy units to be granted the recognition since 2019. The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that have demonstrated a commitment to patient safety and quality in endoscopy as evidenced by meeting the program’s rigorous criteria, which includes following the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscope reprocessing, CDC infection control guidelines and ensuring endoscopy staff competency.
Saint Peter’s Endoscopy Services Department within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology provides diagnostic procedures for the digestive system in a compassionate and high-quality care environment. From routine screenings and tests to advanced procedures for complex cases, the department’s skilled team of physicians, nurses, and technicians is dedicated to fostering a healing atmosphere for patients.
Saint Peter’s offers a wide range of gastroenterological procedures such as colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, and advanced gastrointestinal (GI) procedures for both adult and pediatric patients. In addition to GI care, the department provides pulmonary services for bronchial and lung screenings, advanced bronchial procedures, and renal services such as kidney stone screenings. Clinical GI services have also been expanded to an office at Saint Peter’s Specialty Physicians in Lakewood, allowing Saint Peter’s to offer more convenient care to patients in the area. The new location is welcoming new patients.
“It’s an honor for our team to be recognized once again by ASGE for our efforts to enhance quality and safety for our patients,” said Arkady Broder, MD, AGAF, FACG, FASGE, chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Saint Peter’s University Hospital. “By staying up-to-date with the latest education and consistently meeting the high standards of the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program, we show our patients that we're committed to delivering the best care possible.”
To be recognized by ASGE, a unit, through a peer-reviewed application process, must attest to the continued competence of all staff relative to their roles, demonstrate the adoption of unit policies specific to ongoing assessment of performance relative to key quality indicators, and attest that the unit has an established infrastructure and personnel dedicated to infection control and prevention. The program is applicable to all settings where endoscopy is practiced, including office-based endoscopy units, hospital-based endoscopy units, and stand-alone ambulatory surgery centers.
An important component of the program is an educational course entitled, “Improving Quality and Safety in Your Endoscopy Unit,” that thoroughly reviews related guidelines. Upon completion of the program, successful applicants are awarded honoree status in the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program and receive the ASGE Certificate of Recognition of Quality in Endoscopy. The certificate is granted for a three-year renewable period. For a full list of program benefits, log on to www.asge.org.
“We are proud to acknowledge these endoscopy units through our Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program for their commitment to promoting the highest standards of quality and safety,” said Joe Elmunzer, MD, chair, ASGE Quality Assurance in Endoscopy Committee. “By ensuring infection control principles are adhered to, continually assessing the competency of staff, and monitoring patient satisfaction, ASGE honoree units contribute to the public’s confidence in endoscopy, a life-saving technology.”
