What does a lactation consultant do?
A lactation consultant is someone who specializes in providing breastfeeding support. Lactation consultants can help new parents, surrogate or adoptive parents, parents who have already breastfed other children, parents of multiples, parents of premature babies, and just about any other scenario you can think of! You can start lactation consultant services while you’re still pregnant, newly postpartum, or even months into your breastfeeding journey.

Lactation consultants can help with:

  • Preparing for breastfeeding
  • Infant latching challenges
  • Clogged ducts and/or mastitis
  • Dealing with painful nipples
  • Optimal positions for breastfeeding
  • Concerns regarding milk supply
  • Breastfeeding when returning to work
  • Weaning
  • Tongue tie
  • Nighttime feeding
  • Breast pump support

Meet Your Lactation Consultant
Norma Ross, IBCLC, is an advanced practice nurse and a certified lactation consultant with years of experience working with mothers and babies. Breastfeeding Support Group
This support group for new mothers, separate from the Breastfeeding Support Services available, is offered on the first Tuesday of every month from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. If you are currently breastfeeding, you and your baby are invited to attend our breastfeeding support group and share your experience with other new moms. The group is facilitated by a board certified lactation consultant. Please call the Lactation Department at 732.745.8600, extension 8820 for the location of the meeting.
