Multidisciplinary Approach to GERD

The Heartburn and Reflux Center at Saint Peter’s University Hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The Saint Peter’s Heartburn and Reflux Center’s team of expert physicians can evaluate and treat heartburn and reflux by finding the best individualized treatment for patients, including recommending lifestyle changes such as weight loss and prescribing medications when necessary.  Comprehensive evaluation can be done using state-of-the-art technology in the Saint Peter’s Gastrointestinal (GI) Motility and GERD Therapy Laboratory. For patients who require surgical intervention because medications have not provided significant relief, Saint Peter’s is the only area hospital to offer the LINX® Reflux Management System a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that cures GERD.  During the procedure, a ring of small, flexible titanium-covered magnetic beads is placed around the esophagus. The ring helps the lower esophageal sphincter resist opening to gastric pressures, preventing reflux from the stomach entering the esophagus.
A digestive disorder that can cause heartburn and reflux, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a common disease that affects up to 40 percent of the U.S. population in its lifetime. It can be a treatable disease. However, if left untreated, chronic GERD can damage the esophagus, leading to a precancerous condition called Barrett’s esophagus which can progress to esophageal cancer.
