The Gastrointestinal (GI) Motility and GERD Therapy Laboratory within the Division of Gastroenterology at Saint Peter’s University Hospital assists with the testing and diagnosing of complex heartburn and swallowing disorders using state-of-the-art technology. Evaluation and diagnosis of patients who have suspected disorders are important to prescribing individualized treatment.
Using state-of-the-art equipment, the following procedures are performed in the Saint Peter’s GI Motility and GERD Therapy Laboratory:
BARRX Radio Frequency Ablation Therapy
A new treatment option for Barrett’s Esophagus, a condition that can often result from having chronic heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A physician provides treatment as part of an upper endoscopy procedure. BARRX can minimize the risk of developing esophageal cancer in patients suffering from Barrett’s Esophagus by destroying the potentially precancerous tissue.

The ManoScan™ ESO High-Resolution Manometry System
This procedure is for the diagnosis of esophageal disorders such as difficulty swallowing liquids and solids, heartburn or regurgitation; it is done in 10 minutes or less in the laboratory.

Digitrapper™ Reflux Testing System
This procedure is for the evaluation of patients who continue to have symptoms of reflux despite taking medicine to alleviate them.

Bravo™ Reflux Testing System
For the study and understanding of symptoms of acid reflux or GERD in patients for whom medication has not provided relief, this procedure uses a capsule that travels through the digestive system to collect data while the individual goes about normal activities with no disruption to his/her regular diet or activities.

Anorectal Manometry
AnoRectal Manometry is a test that measures how well the rectum and anal sphincters work together to eliminate feces. The test is performed by a physician with nursing support. It is performed by inserting a catheter that contains a probe imbedded with sensors through the anus and rectum.
