GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a digestive disorder that can cause heartburn and regurgitation. Symptoms of GERD can include chest pain, cough, hoarseness, throat pain, chronic throat clearing and dental erosions.

People experience GERD when the contents of their stomach flow back up into their esophagus. Heartburn can best be described as a burning chest pain that starts behind the breastbone and moves up to the neck and throat. Regurgitation can be best described as a sour taste in the mouth or sense of undigested food moving up and down the chest.   In addition to discomfort, even pain, GERD can be a risk factor for more serious illnesses including esophageal strictures, Barrett’s esophagus, and even esophageal cancer.

What can potentially cause GERD?
  • Being overweight
  • Overeating
  • Foods that contain citrus, chocolate, and are fatty or spicy
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
