The Women’s Imaging Center at Saint Peter’s University Hospital is certified by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and all our technologists are certified in mammography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Screening Mammograms are available Monday through Friday and one Saturday per month. Walk-in screenings are available Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM.
Your mammogram is read by a board-certified radiologist with specialty training in breast imaging and processed through a CAD (computer-aided detection) system to highlight abnormal areas, giving the radiologist a second pair of eyes. Digital mammography facilitates early detection of breast cancer and allows for treatment at these early stages.
A diagnostic breast ultrasound is used to evaluate symptoms which include breast lumps or pain, or when an area of concern has been identified on a diagnostic mammogram. Saint Peter’s uses the Hologic®Genius™3D Mammography™ in its Women’s Imaging Center, technology that has been proven to detect 20-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to traditional 2D mammography. In addition, the Genius 3D Mammography technology reduces 40% of unnecessary callbacks, an anxiety-inducing situation for any patient and even more common for those with dense breast tissue. Genius 3D is the only mammogram that is FDA approved as superior for patients with dense breasts.
In addition, Saint Peter’s uses the Hologic® SmartCurve™ for a more comfortable mammography experience. SmartCurve is a curved compression paddle that is shaped more like a woman’s natural breast. It is clinically proven to increase comfort and decrease the pain associated with the compression of breast tissue during the procedure. Saint Peter’s is the only hospital in Middlesex County offering the combination of Genius 3D Mammography exams in conjunction with the SmartCurve comfort feature.
Services provided include ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy, cyst aspiration, and fine needle aspiration. We work closely with our Pathology Department when doing procedures such as aspirations, in order to retrieve enough samples to make a diagnosis. This convenient access to the pathology department during these procedures separates us from our competitors.
Our facility also performs stereotactic-guided breast biopsy procedures. This minimally invasive procedure is performed by an interventional breast radiologist. Our nursing assistant and technologist create a comfortable and soothing environment, using music to reduce anxiety and relax the patient during the visit. The procedure is performed by using a specially designed mammography table that uses digital imaging to pinpoint the exact location of the breast lesion from two different angles. This procedure is done with the utmost delicateness and precision to ensure a diagnosis and minimize discomfort.
