The physical therapists of Saint Peter’s Physical Rehabilitation Services offer a free training program designed to help prevent injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. The Prevent injury, Enhance Performance—or PEP—Program, as it is known, is a 15-minute exercise regimen that replaces the traditional warm-up. Developed in California by a team of physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and coaches, PEP increases flexibility and strength and teaches athletes how to avoid injury.
Program highlights include:- Designed for student athletes age 13 through college
- Individual one-and-a-half hour training sessions
- Teaching coaches what to look for in their students’ performances and how to correct their form
The warm-up regimen begins with a brief warm-up jog as well as side-to-side and backward running. Targeted stretching and strengthening exercises build flexibility and strength in the legs and are followed by plyometrics - exercises that increase power and strength. Proprioceptive exercises, balance exercises often performed with eyes closed, can be added to the program for additional strength and to further reduce the risk of injury.
The PEP Program is offered to town leagues and school athletic programs—free-of-charge—and includes a follow-up visit several months later to evaluate the athletes and make sure the program is working for them.
